Take a tour through history, by travelling from Paihia to Hokianga along the old stagecoach route; originally designed by early Maori, this trail became heavily used by traders and merchants who transported supplies, kauri, gum and timber between the coasts in the 19th and 20th centuries. Learn of Kupe, which is believed to be the first Maori voyager to find New Zealand over 1000 years ago, as well as many other legends of the local sub-tribe, hapu.
Along the way, in addition to learning the cultural stories from your knowledgeable Local guide, view many natural historical sites. Visit the Waipoua Kauri Forest to view some of the largest kauri trees in the world, including the largest known in the world—the Tane Mahuta (the Lord of the Forest); estimated to be 2,000 years old, this iconic tree is over 13 meters wide and is 51 meters tall. On your way back you will enjoy a visit to the Kawiti Glow Worm Caves. One of the best-kept secrets of the Northlands.
