Yungaburra

This historic township located amongst the Atherton Tablelands (or Cairns Highlands) is a living showcase of early 1900's heritage-listed architecture preserved in great condition that's akin to stepping directly back into Tropical North Queensland's past. Yungaburra Heritage Village sits roughly 1 hour drive from the centre of Cairns and is full of warm country charm with a multitude of its original buildings still in use to this day all amongst a picturesque, rolling landscape formed over thousands of years. It's a pleasant destination for a historic stroll in its own right and home to a number of quaint and interesting individual attractions including several charming boutique stores line its main street and a number of intriguing natural highlights as well.

The towering Curtain Fig Tree is a long standing regional highlight and one of the largest of its kind in QLD and has a purpose-built boardwalk to take in its unusual shape. There's also a platypus viewing platform on the edge of the village for the public to look out for one of Australia's most loveable animals up close, and the Peterson Creek Wildlife and Botanical Walking Track for a dose of creek and heritage scenery that encompasses views of old architecture. Those looking for some charming local retail therapy can attend the Yungaburra Markets, which offer arts, crafts, fresh fruits and vegetables on the fourth Saturday of each month from 7:30am to 12:30pm, while those looking to extend their stay can choose from a variety of accommodation options on both ends of the budget spectrum.

Yungaburra is a lovely, laid-back slice of regional charm with plenty to offer both as a day trip destination from Cairns and as a gateway to the further offerings of the Highlands; a spot where nature, history, shopping and dining combine to make for an essential itinerary item in the region.
