Tjaynera Falls

This idyllic waterhole surrounded by the greenery of paperbark trees and featuring a cool, uncrowded plunge pool is a true oasis of life nestled in an isolated spot amongst fiery orange-red surrounds. Tjaynera Falls (or Sandy Creek Falls) comes equipped with a small and relatively rudimentary campground with toilets and showers (and not much else), however due to its location it's much quieter than other campgrounds in the region and thus ideal for those for whom seclusion and peace is a priority. Its key feature is the namesake waterfall, which features a drop of around 40 metres into the plunge pool below, and which typically flows all year round unless the dry season has hit particularly hard.

Water here is cold but swimmable, particularly during hottest times of the year or after just completing the roughly 1.4km walk required to the pool of the base of the falls that takes around half an hour after parking your car. Gaining access to Tjaynera Falls requires traversing a moderately challenging 4WD track that can involve crossing some water, and which is subject to closure during the wet season. If you're looking for a tropical oasis surrounded by native plants with some quality swimming to boot, Tjaynera Falls / Sandy Creek is one of Litchfield National Park's best spots.
