Location

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is located in Dubbo, in central west New South Wales. The Zoo is home to hundreds of animals from around the world and consists of free access Visitor Plaza and a hotel 5km circuit that meanders through natural bushland and around large open style exhibits.

Find yourself surrounded by magnificent wildlife on wide open plains. Plan your own route around the incredible 300 hectare site, whether you stroll around the circuit or hire bikes or carts! It’s a fun way to spend time with family and friends, away from it all.

Operating Hours

  • Open every day of the year, including Christmas Day from 9am to 4pm
  • During school holidays, the Zoo is open 8:30am to 4:30pm

Location

  • Taronga Western Plains Zoo is located on Obley Road, Dubbo. Free parking at the Zoo is available both at the Savannah Visitor Plaza and in parking bays throughout the Zoo circuit

Getting around the Zoo by Car

  • The Zoo operates on a 5km one-way circuit system, with the animal exhibits and picnic grounds situated along the route. Most exhibits can be seen from the road, but a few require you to walk a short distance. The Zoo circuit is a public road and normal road rules apply at all times

Getting around the Zoo by Bike

  • An ideal way to experience the Zoo is by bike or on foot. Bikes are available for hire, but visitors are welcome to bring their own. While the Zoo also provides helmets, it is recommended that visitors bring their own where possible
  • The Zoo does not take bookings for hire bikes, visitors should enquire at the hire centre upon arrival to arrange the best option
  • It is important to remember that the Zoo circuit is a public road and normal road rules apply at all times.
  • The first half of the Zoo circuit has a slight incline, but otherwise it is reasonably flat. During the warmer months be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat and drink plenty of water

Getting around the Zoo by Cart

  • Electric carts are available for hire. Carts are in high demand during weekends and school holidays, so we recommend that visitors enquire about their availability directly with the operator prior to attending the Zoo

  • There’s now an exciting new way to experience the glistening Savannah Lake at the Zoo! See Spider Monkeys and Black and White Ruffed Lemurs like never before as you cruise by pedal boat around the Primate Islands in this family-fun experience
  • Pedal boat hire is available between 10.00am to 3.00pm between Thursday to Sunday - *extra days available during NSW School Holidays. Visit the Zoo’s Boat Hire Centre to book.
  • The maximum capacity of a pedal boat is two (2) adults and two (2) children, and the maximum weight is 300kgs
  • For safety reasons, children must weigh a minimum of 10kg to participate
  • Life jackets will be supplied and must be worn at all times
  • Children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 years or above, parents/guardians must actively supervise their children at all times

  • To qualify as a Family: minimum of 3 pax including a minimum of 1 child (4 – 15 yrs). Taronga Western Plains Zoo Zoo reserves the right to refuse admission if family requirements are not met

To ensure that you and your kids get the most out of your visit, follow our simple tips: Plan how you are going to get around the Zoo. It’s a big place! Be sure to check out as many Keeper Activities as you can – they are free (included in your ticket) and a great way to see the animals and the Keepers who look after them. Remember your ticket is valid for two consecutive days – so if you miss something on day one, you can return the following day! Also don’t miss the Waterhole, including kids water play area, and the newly opened Wildlife Hospital – you can watch the Zoo’s vets at work!
