Sculpted out of volcanic activity thousands of years in the making, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is considered to be New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing attractions - one of the most surreal places on earth. Enjoy viewing unique volcanic features as you walk at your own pace along a choice of three well defined tracks.

Time

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is open 7 days a week 8:30am - 4:30pm with last admission at 3pm. The park is open all year round excluding Christmas Day 25th December.

Duration

  • The Self Guided Tour (General Admission) begins at the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland Visitor Centre. It takes approximately 90 minutes for the full park walk. Parking is available a short walk from the Visitor Centre.
  • Allow 15-20 minutes for Health & Safety briefing prior to your walk. Our comprehensive Health and Safety procedures are in place to provide all guests an enjoyable experience in a safe and sustainable manner.

  • Tours begin at the Waiotapu Visitor Centre. Please arrive around 15 minutes before your tour.

How To Get There

From Rotorua

  • Travel south along the Thermal Explorer Highway (SH 5) towards Taupo for 27km (20 mins drive) until you reach the Waiotapu Tavern. Turn left opposite the tavern and travel 2km to reach Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

From Taupo

  • Travel north along the Thermal Explorer Highway (SH 5) towards Rotorua for 53km (40 mins drive). Turn right where signposted and travel a further 1km to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland.

  • Auckland - Rotorua (234kms) - 3.5hrs
  • Hamilton - Rotorua (107kms) - 1.75hrs
  • Wellington - Rotorua (460kms) - 6.5hrs
  • Rotorua - Wai O Tapu (27kms) - 20mins
  • Taupo - Wai O Tapu (53kms) - 40 mins

Terms And Conditions

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a natural geothermal area and contains various hazards. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience the following guidelines must be adhered to:

  • Parents must have full control of children at all times. No carrying of children on shoulders.
  • All visitors must stay behind barriers and strictly to the formed pathways at all times.
  • Strictly no smoking, vaping or flying of drones.
  • The removal of geothermal rocks and sands is prohibited.
  • All native flora and fauna are protected.
  • Suitable clothing and footwear is strongly advised.
  • If you hear a siren for more than 30 seconds, please move to the nearest assembly point or evacuate to the main car park.

Cancellation Policy

  • You may cancel your bookings at any time prior to making full payment without any penalty, unless otherwise specified. If you cancel your bookings after making full payment, our refund policy applies.
  • Notification of cancellation is required 24 hours prior to arrival or expiry of ticket
